The Conservatives' new child tax policy, and the little tax devils in the detail
The Conservatives have announced a new policy idea to alter the tax rules around phasing out child benefit for higher-income families, which could help a number of working families, including executives in the City of London.
But to get it right, they need to be careful not to remove a tax trap in one part of the income scale, only to create a similar trap further up that scale.
We dive deeper into the proposal and its consequences in this alert.

Child benefit changes just move distortions higher up the income scale

Is the Green Party's National Insurance proposal perhaps a little green?
During her appearance on Question Time broadcast on 6 June, Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party, referenced the Party’s proposal to “remove the cap on National Insurance” on the basis that the current system “means the richest pay less”.
We provide our perspectives in this alert.
PRE-ELECTION PERSPECTIVE
Reducing net migration has superseded four of the PM's five key pledges
At the beginning of 2023 Rishi Sunak made five pledges to the country. His government would halve inflation, grow the economy, reduce debt, cut NHS waiting lists and pass laws to stop small boat crossings.
Last December, Vialto Partners' Ian Robinson wrote in City A.M. that the Prime Minister's new plans to curb net migration may end up undermining all of them.
PRE-ELECTION PERSPECTIVE
The Tories' non-dom gambit
Prior to the election call, Vialto Partners' Ash Majithia and Conor Tobin penned an editorial in The Times, examining the Conservative government's proposed reforms to non-dom taxation rules.
Their article underscores the critical equilibrium between fostering global mobility and upholding tax equity. (Note: access to article requires subscription.)
